Tips for Writing your Personal Statement essay

The Personal Statement essay tells us a lot about each candidate. Make your statement stand out! Here are some tips for writing a strong Personal Statement essay:

1. Choose ONE of the prompts to write about.

There are three prompt suggestions for the Personal Statement. Focus your response on ONE prompt of your choice.

2. Write in your own words… DO NOT use AI!

Write the essay yourself, in your own words. We want to know the real you, so write from your own perspective. DO NOT USE AI!

3. Videos of your personal statement are highly encouraged!

Instead of submitting a written essay, consider submitting a video essay. This is not only a chance to show us your English-speaking skills but also your creativity! As long as you answer the prompt, you are welcome to be creative and show us why you would make a strong Tomorrow’s Leaders candidate. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through!

4. Focus on your unique life experiences.

We want to hear about YOUR life story, not the story of someone famous or someone related to you. What makes you unique? Why are YOU interested in the Tomorrow’s Leaders program?

5. Make sure the audio and visuals are clear.

We need to be able to hear you in the video, so be sure to record it somewhere that has minimal background noise. Any visuals used in your video essay should also be clear.

6. Practice often and try to speak naturally.

Avoid reading directly from a script or speaking too quickly when filming your video response. Rehearse your video essay often so that you feel confident and natural when you record it. Practicing your response aloud will help build your confidence. Practicing with a family member or friend will also help you receive feedback on areas where you can improve. Be genuine in your responses and do not feel the need to rush. The goal is to get to know you!
